I have now been in the land of the Mayans for 8 days. I arrived on an overnight bus from Mexico on Monday morning to Guatemala City. I was greeted by a guy named Trix who is one of the leaders of Christian Surfers Guatemala and a local legend when it comes to skateboarding. He welcomed me into his home in the city and I was able to rest and spend a lot of time with him constructing a mini half-pipe that was to be used in a local surf-skate shop. Guatemala City is one of the most modern cities in Central America. There are numerous over-priced malls and shopping centers and since it is a city up in the mountains there are a lot of pine trees and the air is much cooler than the beach-side areas I usually visit. It was a nice change to the intense heat I've become accustomed to. The city is also very dangerous as it is full of crime and theft. It was very easy to stay inside Trix's house come nightfall.
Edgar Guillen (National Director) arrived during the weekend and on Sunday morning a group of 5 of us took off to the beach to spend a day surfing. Edgar sells and repairs surfboards in Guatemala City and is well-known through-out the Guatemalan surf culture. We surfed a jetty break that day and returned to the city that night. CS Guatemala is still a young ministry and though they have a bunch of contacts living in different beach communities, they only have one beach where there is continual ministry taking place. The local churches have been a great support in doing events here and there, but the local surfers lack unity and motivation to do good. Politics and poverty have plagued this surf community for many years now.
Please be in prayer for the local CS leaders as they wait on God and strive forward to see lives changed, hearts molded, and communities impacted.
Today, I jump on one more bus. On Thursday, I arrive back in Panama to catch a flight back home to the Dominican Republic. Though I have met so many amazing people on this trip, experienced so many different cultures and have learned so much, I'm ready after nearly 7 weeks of traveling to be home again.
Thanks to all who sent support to make this trip possible, to all who have been praying for me, and for all of you who continue to give and will be giving in the future as CS continues to act on the calling we've received to love surfers.
