I can't believe that summer is already upon us. Schools are finishing up, the weather is warmer, and students are graduating. I was blessed to visit my fiancé this week who graduated from the Grad School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. I was with Emily for four days in Philadelphia and am super stoked to be marrying her this summer. Besides visiting Emily, I was able to make a couple trips this past month. I was a part of initiating a new mission to Christian Surfers in Cuba and was blessed to be a part of Christian Surfers' International Leadership Team (ILT) meetings in Australia.
Cuba is an island not very well known to most Americans, but with God ahead of me and the US Government allowing travelers to visit Cuba on a religious visa, I went. I was met by Yohnly and his pastor - Osmel at the airport and we jumped in an old Chevy from the 60's. (Cuba is full of old vehicles, it was awesome seeing the streets full of them). Yohnly was one of the first surfers in Cuba and three years ago was led to Christ through an outreach event held at Osmel's church. He has been discipled and has become one of the leaders in his congregation while maintaining close ties with the beach and the small and impoverished Cuban surf community.
Both Osmel and Yohnly contacted Christian Surfers hoping to start a ministry in their country of Cuba. There are approximately 80 surfers in the La Havana area and few surfboards that they all share. Osmel's church has been loving them and is dedicated to winning this generation of surfers for Christ. I was able to do some initial training with them regarding surf ministry and gave them a grand introduction to Christian Surfers and the ministry God has called us to internationally.
By the grace of God, Yohnly, with the support of his church are beginning the first Christian Surfers community in Cuba. Please pray for them as they seek God's will in winning Cuban surfers for Christ. I'm incredibly excited for them
ILT Meetings -
I was the new guy on the block for the annual ILT meetings. It was my first time in person with all the different Regional Coordinators and though I was nervous going into it - I was received with open arms into the group. It amazed me to be part of this like minded group of people from all over the world - dedicated to reaching surfers. The week was spent in meetings almost everyday. In representing our regions - we had a lot to cover everyday as we continue strategizing and casting vision for our mission internationally. Of course - being surfers - we surfed a few times as well. We camped in tents the whole week and met in a small conference room on the same property. Everything went very well during the meetings and I am very humbled and excited to see where God leads us. Please pray for the future of our international mission that we may represent the body of believers among surfers.
