Dear Family and Friends,
Welcome to the first newsletter and joint blog of Emily (Jamison) and Dustin Miller! The past few months have been a whirlwind! We spent June and July finishing up wedding plans, finding an apartment, and moving. Dustin got most of his yearly traveling done before our wedding, visiting Christian Surfers (CS) ministries in Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Meanwhile, Emily readjusted to life in the DR, reconnected with friends, and went back to work at the Park Care Center. On August 9th, we got married! We were blessed to celebrate with many of our closest friends and family members both at our ceremony here in the Dominican Republic and at our stateside reception in Pennsylvania. We honeymooned through Panama and Costa Rica and enjoyed snorkeling, surfing, suspension bridges in the mountains, and lots of rest.
September: School started, and Emily served as interim principal for 6 weeks. It was a great learning experience, but she’s pretty sure school administration is not her calling! Dustin jumped right back into work as well, catching up with Christian Surfers ministries around the region. Dustin also volunteers at Emily’s school once a week in order to partner with Kids Alive and support Emily’s calling.
October: We started October with a visit from Brett Davis, the founder and international director of Christian Surfers. Then we flew to Ft Lauderdale, FL, for an Action Sports Ministry conference. It was a great weekend of learning, connecting with influential people in action sports across the US, and enjoying a few pumpkin spice lattes! Emily got to meet a lot of the people Dustin works with in Christian Surfers and appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Christian Surfers. When we got home, Emily transitioned from interim principal back to her role of K-2 coordinator and a new job as disciplinarian. She enjoys spending one-on-one time with students who are sent to the office, talking about their behavior and choices. Dustin participated in the Christian Surfers DR board meeting and continues to work on planning the 2014 CS International Conference.
How You Can Support Us
First, as always, we need your prayers! Serving cross-culturally and being newlyweds are each challenges on their own, and we’re combining the two – pray for God’s grace to cover our marriage! Pray that we will continue to love and serve each other before serving outside our home, and that our marriage and our ministries would represent God’s love here in the Dominican Republic. Here are some specific requests:
- pray that God will continue to bless our marriage and guide us as we learn how to live together and love each other well
- pray for wisdom as we begin an English Bible study for young adults at our home in Sosúa
- pray for Christian Surfers and Kids Alive, that God would continue to work through both ministries to make His name known
Second, you can support us financially. As a married couple, our financial situation has changed, and we have established a modest but sustainable budget. To cover our living expenses and Dustin’s Christian Surfers travel costs, we need $2200 a month. Through the generosity of our current monthly supporters, we have raised about $1800 a month. That means we still need to raise $400 a month.
If you already support us monthly, thank you! If you have given a one-time gift, thank you! Please prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to be a monthly partner.
For more information on how to support us through either Kids Alive or Christian Surfers, click on the "support" link at the top of this website. We will be in Florida and Pennsylvania after Christmas, and we would love to get together with you to talk about our ministries and how you can be involved.
Thank you for supporting us, loving us, praying for us, and sharing in God’s work here in the Dominican Republic and around the world!
